Neuropsychological Assessments

Psychological assessments are used by psychologists to measure and observe a person's behavior in order to derive a diagnosis that can guide treatment.  Psychologists administer tests to examine various concerns.  When children have difficulty learning in school they may undergo testing in order to determine if they have learning or emotional problems that are preventing them from performing at their ability level.  Neuropsychological assessments involve the administration of tests that examine such areas as memory, visual motor integration skills, language abilities, attention, etc. in order to identify difficulties related to brain injuries or other types of neurological insult.  Psychological and neuropsychological assessments help psychologists to understand problems experienced by people and to develop strategies and recommendations to aid in addressing them.

I conduct neuropsychological assessments that examine concerns related to developmental disorders, sensory disabilities (low vision; hearing loss), attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), executive functions, anxiety concerns, academic delays and underachievement, traumatic brain injury, and related emotional adjustment issues.  The process starts with an interview where I gather information about the history, development, and specific concerns related to the individual referred for testing.  Testing generally takes 1 to 2 days (approximately 3 to 4 hours per day).  Test batteries are individualized and designed to address the specific areas of concern.  After testing is completed a feedback session is held where the results of the assessment are shared and recommendations to improve the individual's functioning are discussed.

For difficulties related to school performance, I will contact the school and may observe the student in the classroom with permission from the family.
